Citi Bank Explores Tokenization of Private Equity Funds Using Avalanche Blockchain

Citi Bank has embarked on an innovative journey to explore the tokenization of private equity funds, leveraging the Avalanche blockchain’s capabilities to potentially revolutionize capital markets. In a groundbreaking move, the bank utilized Avalanche’s Spruce Subnet, a layer 1 solution tailored for large financial institutions aiming to adopt public blockchain infrastructure.

This initiative was part of a proof-of-concept trial conducted in collaboration with financial giants such as WisdomTree and Wellington Management. The trial focused on a range of use cases within private markets, aiming to uncover new efficiencies and operational models by employing blockchain technology.

The adoption of Avalanche’s Spruce Subnet by Citi and other traditional finance (TradFi) powerhouses like T. Rowe Price and Cumberland marks a significant step forward in Wall Street’s exploration of blockchain’s potential. These firms joined the subnet with the goal of enhancing trade execution and settlement processes, showcasing a growing interest in the practical applications of blockchain technology in traditional financial sectors.

Morgan Krupetsky, Senior Director of Business Development, Institutions, and Capital Markets at Ava Labs, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. Krupetsky noted that the involvement of leading financial services firms with Avalanche reinforces its status as a preferred blockchain platform for institutional use.

Citi’s trial on Avalanche included comprehensive testing of token transfers, secondary market trading capabilities, and the validation of new features like collateralized lending. Through the use of smart contracts, the bank demonstrated the potential for increased automation, improved compliance, and better controls for both investors and issuers.

Nisha Surendran, Citi Digital Assets’ Emerging Solutions Lead, expressed optimism about the trial’s implications. By testing the tokenization of private assets, Citi aims to assess the viability of new operating models and the creation of market-wide efficiencies. This endeavor reflects a broader industry trend towards embracing blockchain technology to enhance traditional financial processes and open up new avenues for investment and capital management.
